The New York Knicks and free agent power forward Amar’e Stoudemire agreed to a five-year deal. It’s worth nearly $100 million, Sports Illustrated reported on Monday. The deal cannot be made official until the NBA free agency period begins in earnest on Thursday.
A report last Thursday by KTAR Radio in Phoenix said Stoudemire and the Phoenix Suns had broken off contract talks. ESPN reported the Suns were offering a maximum five-year contract but were not prepared to fully guarantee the last two years of the deal.
A perennial All-Star, Stoudemire has had microfracture knee surgery and a serious eye injury in his seven years with the Suns. He also has drawn strong interest from the Miami Heat.
The acquisition of Stoudemire would potentially help the Knicks land a second star free agent. They are targeting Cleveland’s LeBron James and/or Miami’s Dwayne Wade.
Stoudemire is currently priced at +2000 to win the 2010-11 MVP award at Sportsbook.com.
