The Portland, Oregon Police Department officially reopened the Al Gore sexual assault case after Molly Hagerty, the 54-year-old masseuse who had accused the former Vice President with attempted rape in 2006 and 2009, called the Nobel Peace Prize-winner a “pervert and sexual predator” in the latest issue of the National Enquirer.
There are reports that Molly Hagerty offered to sell her story to the supermarket tabloid for $1 million. The Enquirer originally broke the Monica Lewinsky sex scandal story that nearly elevated Al Gore to the Presidency after his boss, Bill Clinton, was impeached. It also broke the story about former U.S. Senator John Edwards’ love child that dashed the 2004 Democratic Vice Presidential nominee’s political career and marriage.
Hagerty had first accused Gore of sexual misconduct in 2006, but dropped the case in order to pursue a civil lawsuit seeking damages for sexual harassment. No case was ever filed. She re-approached the Portland Police Department in 2009, giving them a lengthy statement, but the police decided not to go ahead with the case due to a lack of evidence.
She contacted the department this year to see if she could amend her 2009 statement. She was told she could add to it, but not edit it. Hagerty then told the police, after obtaining a copy of her statement, that she had decided to go to the court of public opinion to indict Al Gore.
Evoking shades of Monicagate, the National Enquirer featured Molly Hagerty on its cover holding a plastic bag with a pair of pants that she says she wore the night of the alleged assault. In her 2009 statement, she claimed to the police that the pants she wore that night were in her possession and were stained, a state of affairs that is highlighted with its own bold sub-headline on the Enquirer cover.
The headline intimates that Hagerty’s britches were besmirched with Al Gore’s semen. Monica Lewinsky, on the advice of Linda Tripp, had kept a dress that had been stained with Bill Clinton’s “D.N.A.” in order to protect herself from possible retaliation from the President.
